Cairns on show to the world
Locals invited to a family movie night!
Cairns will be on show to the world when the largest tourism trade show in the southern hemisphere is hosted in the city from 11 to 15 May.
The Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE14) will bring approximately 1800 tourism buyers and media from around the world to stay in the Cairns Central Business District.
This is the first time in its 35-year history that ATE has been held in a regional area, so it is a wonderful opportunity for our city to show what a great destination we live in. As well as an immediate $10 million economic impact, ATE14 will bring the region long-lasting recognition for years to come.
A local advisory group has been working on strategies to help the community make our tourism VIPs feel welcome.
This includes competitions in the media to raise awareness of the event, a poster competition for school children, CBD business signage welcoming delegates and briefings with taxi and transport operators.
Additional free exercise classes have been arranged on the Esplanade so delegates can join the locals in an early morning yoga or Pilates class.
Free outdoor movie screening and fireworks display – May 14: As a big thank you for the community support for ATE14, everyone is invited to relax on the Cairns Esplanade with a free outdoor family movie screening under the palm trees on May 14.
Despicable Me 2 will be shown at a pop-up cinema on the Western Events Lawn at the Esplanade Lagoon at 6.30pm; and a fireworks display at 8.10pm.
Temporary structures will be built beside the Cairns Convention Centre to accommodate ATE14.
Changes to traffic conditions:
A section of Grafton Street south of Hartley St (adjacent to the Cairns Convention Centre) will be closed from 5am Saturday, 26 April to, Sunday 25 May.
The car park on the corner of Lake and Wharf Street will be closed from 6am Saturday, 26 April to Sunday, 25 May.
NOTE: Signage will be erected in this area and any vehicles within the closed areas will be towed at the owner’s expense.
Alternative parking in the CBD: The closest alternative carpark during this time is the Hartley Street Car Park located on the corner of Sheridan and Hartley streets at a cost of $3 per day and free on the weekend. .
